Filerimos Monastery

Perched on the peaceful hill of Filerimos near Ialyssos on the island of Rhodes,

the historic Filerimos Monastery is one of the island’s most fascinating religious and cultural landmarks. Surrounded by pine and cypress trees, the monastery offers visitors a unique combination of history, spirituality, and breathtaking panoramic views over the Aegean Sea.

The site stands on the remains of the ancient Acropolis of Ialyssos, where temples dedicated to Athena and Zeus once stood. During the Byzantine era, a Christian church was built here, and later the Knights of Saint John transformed the area into a monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The monastery was rebuilt during the Italian occupation of Rhodes, preserving its Gothic and Byzantine architectural elements.

One of the most famous treasures associated with Filerimos is the sacred icon of the Virgin Mary of Filerimos, believed by tradition to have been painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist. Although the original icon is no longer kept on the island, the monastery remains an important place of pilgrimage and faith.

Visitors can walk along the beautiful “Way to Calvary,” lined with cypress trees and depictions of the Passion of Christ, leading to the giant cross overlooking the island. The peaceful atmosphere, ancient ruins, charming courtyards, and wandering peacocks create an unforgettable experience for every traveler.

Today, Filerimos Monastery is not only a religious monument but also a symbol of the rich history and multicultural heritage of Rhodes.
